How Long Do I have To Wear Molar Tubes

Published On: Jan 19, 2022 by Modortho

Orthodontic tubes are also called molar tubes that are fitted around the back of your teeth when constructing a set of braces. It provides a solid anchor to the archwire used in orthodontics. Everyone did not need molar tubes, but those who need should take care to maintain their integrity. Molar tubes are custom-fit to completely encircle the tooth and are made of the ceramic and clear plastic version. The tubes, once fitted, are secured into place with durable and non-toxic cement. The molar tubes also have a hook that is used to correct an overbite onto which removable elastics or Forsus springs can be attached. The alignment and the spacing between the teeth can now be corrected as the archwire is gradually shortened.

Indications
Everyone does not require molar tubes; some only need brackets and archwires for their treatment. Molar tubes are indicated for those who need major correction for their teeth; such as people with extremely wide-tooth gaps, severely uneven bites, and who have less malleable bone structure. It is also appropriate for the children whose teeth have not fully grown as molar tubes better isolate teeth. These are also an ideal option for teeth with large fittings, or who need headgear to correct an overbite.

Pros and cons
As ceramic and plastic tubes are much thicker than metal ones and tend to stain, therefore, not everyone is a candidate for ceramic or clear plastic tubes. However, some people have also complained about the cause of irritation with molar tubes. It may cause tooth decay because when the tooth will be entirely surrounded by any food particle, it will get trapped between the tube and the tooth and can go unrecognized until the damage is done. However, if you will do proper dental care then it may help reduce the risk.

Installation
You need two separate appointments to install an orthodontic molar tube. In the first appointment, orthodontists ensure that there is enough space around the teeth so that the tube can be slipped on comfortably. The orthodontist will make a dental impression so that the tubes can be correctly sized before starting the procedure. This process needs a casting gel and a disposable cup in the shape of your upper and lower teeth. After this, they will create a plaster replica of your teeth. Now is the time to clean your mouth and insert the elastic separator between your teeth with the help of the pliers. It is a painless procedure. Moreover, you have to avoid flossing, eating sticky food, or chewing gums at least for a week.
After a week, there will be your second appointment to install and cement the orthodontic tubes into place. The orthodontist will have obtained the correct size of tubes for each tooth as per your dental impression. Now, your elastic separators will be removed to fix the tubes.  You can remove the tubes after the orthodontists ensure that the sizing is correct. They will polish your teeth and re-apply your tubes with the cement. You have to wear the tubes until the treatment is complete, i.e., in around 12 to 18 months.
